Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas everyone! I hope wherever you are and whoever you are with you are having a fine Christmas.
My mind has very much been on other things lately, I'm really enjoying my new writing project. So, as I said earlier this month the time has come for me to make some changes.
This week I stepped down as an active member from Hothouse. It was a huge wrench for me because Hothouse is where all my success has stemmed from. Without the support of Hothouse I feel quite anxious, but I still have Writer's Beat where I can benefit from critique.
The Red Asylum is motoring now as we gear up for our first edition in January and since we got listed on Duotrope it has really made a difference to our submissions which has been fantastic.
I finally managed to finish Lonely Werewolf Girl by Martin Millar, you can read my review here on Amazon. Limited to reading on the short bus journey to and from work, it did take me some time, it was over 600 pages. But I have to say how fantastic a read it was, thoroughly enjoyable, fun and action packed. I'm going to be ordering the sequel with my Christmas money.

A New Project
Having taken on so much editorial work recently I feel that my own writing has suffered. Gone are the weeks where I could turn out two or three shorts in a week. I now find myself battling to finish even one short story. And then it is never to my satisfaction. I miss my own work and I do have a new writing project being considered which is very exciting for me.
Meantime, being honest with myself, it is time for me to assess whether I have bitten off more than I can chew, and make that hard decision to let something go. I'd rather do a little and do it well, than do a lot and make shoddy work of it. I think, once the current commitment has been met, I already know what I'm letting go of. I don't want to let anyone down. But I'm doing no one any favours if I can't give 100%, including myself.

Pacing myself
There's been some big gaps between my posts recently, don't you think?
Well if you read back through my entries you can see the reason for that. My literary roles, now include:
But how long has it been since I renewed the book of my current read? Well I am still reading Lonely Werewolf Girl, by Martin Millar. But due to everything else I only get to read it on the bus, so I am limited to irregular 30 minute reads. It's a long book anyway at 600 pages, but it's an excellent read, so don't worry I'll get there.
Back in real life, my son's big surprise of a double decker bus, filled with soft play, for his fourth birthday was cancelled, last minute due to an engine explosion on the bus. So despite be completely organised before... I'm not now. Christmas has been pushed into the background while I now concentrate on giving my little boy a weekend to remember with just three days notice. We're gutted about the bus, but it can't be helped. As my son is mad for anything vehicular the bus would have been perfect and I was looking forward to seeing the look on his face when it pulled up outside. However the fact we hadn't told him about it has been a saving grace, because telling him it's not coming when he knew it was would be awful.
Fingers crossed we're all good for a fantastic weekend. Before I get my nose back to grindstone with more reading and writing.

Putting in the overtime
This time of year is always hectic for me. Work reaches fever pitch, home life goes bananas and this year for the first time I have all my writing and associated activities to take on board as well.
It occurred to me the other day that my inbox has been very, very quiet in terms of responses from publishing markets. When I reviewed my Duotrope account I could see why. As the rejections have drip, drip, dripped in of late, I have not been as vigilant in my resubmissions. And many markets I've sub'd to have never replied - frustratingly.
I have two submissions where editors have been in touch of late. One to say I am going to published but news will arrive later this month. And another to say I am still shortlisted and will hear back soon. But I can't rely on those to sustain me. No resting on my laurels here. I'm all up to date with my reading. My writing for HH is also on target, though my editing requires a little bit of attention.
But it's my resubmissions the definitely require the heavy duty sweat and toil. Thankfully I have several windows opening up in the next few days that I can use for this. My goal is to get one or two pieces a day re-subbed over the next week.
In the mean time, don't forget The Red Asylum is still accepting submissions for the first edition. Not only that, but Oddville Press, where I have recently joined as a staff editor, is also looking for submissions after a bit of down time for rest and recuperation.
Come on guys, why should I be the only busy one!
